Ok, this is wrong. Reserving an upgrade is one thing, butg autodownloading windows 10 without the users consent is just wrong.
I agree! Especially, when the screen readers aren't set up for Windows10.
Blessings,
Sarahkins
Not actually.
When you op for automatic updates, if you read the terms, it tells you Microsoft will download these to your computer.
You don’t have to allow it.
All-important updates, or what Microsoft deems important get downloaded. You can choose to install them or not, but they come to you.
I understand the complaint, this is Windows 10, but Microsoft thinks it is an important update.
Screen readers are ready, and this update can be refused, and even deleted easily.
Microsoft will even give you tech support to do so free of charge.
Don’t want updates Microsoft thinks you need, turn off automatic updates.
actually no, turning automatic updates off is a very bad idea!
did you read the article wayne ?
I'm thinking about downgrading my secondary device for now.
I may just buy something to do an insiders thing on.
Yes I will upgrade them all eventually.
Yes the screene readers do work. but I don't like the querks.
Here's how to stop this autodownloading of windows 10
This is not verified to work, but Howtogeek is a trusted source.
http://www.howtogeek.com/228551/how-to-stop-windows-7-or-8-from-downloading-windows-10-automatically/
Thankfully, I somehow missed this nightmare on my Windows 7 machine, as I cannot find that folder anywhere! I will install the patch to ensure that I don't receive it! I don't need 3 to 6gb being taken up with something that I most certainly do not want! Thank you JH_Radio, for bringing this to our attention!
Since MS is gonna try to make you install windows 10 (as they view this as an important update), you need to be sure to uninstall and hide the following updates from windows update if you do not want it to promt you about Windows 10. Note that this will also remove the "Get Windows 10" option from your system tray.
KB3035583 and KB2976978
then you will continue to get any important updatess for whatever OS you are running at the time (either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.)
If you do decide before July of 2016 that you do want Windows 10, go and resore hidden updates .
This behavior of everyone bashing Windows 10 is getting very old. It is not as bad as people think, and works much better than people give it credit for. I have been a Windows insider, and screen readers do work pretty well. Sure there are glitches, but tell me there weren't any when Windows 7 came out. I can tell you for a fact, there were problems, some even worse than what 10 supposedly has, and don't even get me started on Vista and when UAC was first added.
that's besides the point. Users should be able to choose when and if they want to upgrade to Windows 10. Period. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 support do not end for a while yet, so they shouldn't be forced to update to Windows 10 (yes MS consider windows 10 an update) if they don't want too.
So I haven't had a problem yet, and do have automatic windows updates. I read somewhere, since I have an Acer computer, I would need new drivers. May be a silly question here, but should I get sighted help to install 10 because of the driver situation? I have jaws 16 and windows 7.
drivers should just work without a problem. if not, you may need sited help (depending on what driver you are talking about)
If you do decide to go to Windows 10, be sure you have the latest build of Jaws16.
Being one that tried it, I'm holding off for now.
God help me when I decide to upgrade again. Honestly. getting it to not try to update once I downgraded to Windows 7 has been one of the biggest headaches I've ever had to contend with.
UGH!!
I work on a Windows 7 computer sometimes that has not been updated, and I haven’t seen this behavior either.
I am not saying it isn’t there.
When you are doing Windows updates, you can check, or uncheck them.
Even some of the automatic updates can be unchecked.
When I saw Windows 10 offered, a time back, I unchecked it on that computer, because the owner doesn’t wish it.
Maybe this is why I don’t see the behavior.
However, it is an update, and free.
It isn’t like Windows 8 that had to be purchased, so comes in update form.
If you can’t find the folder, Microsoft will remove it for you remotely, if you need technical help.
I agree, Windows 10 simply works, and works well.
I remember windows 7 as well, and for about 6 months it had more glitches.
Yes, turning off automatic updates is not suggested for people that forget to check, but even with them on, you can decide to install, or not to install.
They have always automatically downloaded, so why should Windows 10, a free update be different?
You ask for convenience, then complain when you get one you don’t exactly want. Smile.
It can’t be both ways I suppose
Yes, but you need to know which KB to uncheck.
its not obvious which thing is windows 10.
I object to what MS is doing because this is an entire OS. plus downloading 3GB automaticly? what if you are on one of those HP sream laptops with only 32 gigs of EMMC? what if you are on a metered connection? and frankly, what if you just don't want this thing for whatever reason.
Windows 7 is supported thru January 2020, and windows 8.1 thru 2023 sometime.
so when the windows 10 glitches get removed, I'll try it again. but until then, leave me alone Microsoft!
I did read the article.
I forgot to say.
Okay, I'll grant you, what if you don't want it.
You were instructed way before now that if you wish to choose your updates, to install them manually.
Microsoft has not hidden the fact that if you have on Automatic updates, it will download them to your computer.
They say so.
Just like service patches, these are sometimes redoing lots on your systems.
I can see the gripe, if you had to pay to get help if you are not technically able to do this yourself, but in this case, Microsoft will even return you to your current OS if you accidently install Windows 10, extremely hard to do, and hate it.
I could agree more if you were given something you didn't ask for, and forced to pay to get it undone, but you asked, and can get it undone free.
This service is available 24 7, so even at 2 AM you can get it fixed.
wayne, who checks every update manually? I've worked on system that manual updates have been turned on and they never ever checked to see what was downloaded much less installed them.
In all Windows with the exception of 10, you can get your updeates automaticly downloaded, or you can choose to install them if and when you want.
That is manually.
Take a look at your Windows 7 update section.
Yes I know that. what I'm saying is that I've seen systems where it was set to download but not install until requested and people never bothered to look at each individual update. Who looks at every update and Kb number to see what it is? That is micromanagement which even I don't do.
I know I got the reserve windows 10 bit on my computer and didn't do it; all automatic updates are checked on my computer and I have to say nothing is out of the ordinary at least yet. I'll go with it going on there if it really does. Why not? It's free and as long as it won't glitch jaws 16, which is the latest version I have because I always update it, I will see what happens.
SO there are two confirmed instances of this. OUt of millions of people there are two we know of. It's likely those people clicked reserve and don't remember or did it on accident. I jsut checked my windows 7 desktop and windows 8.1 laptop, neither of them have had this happen.
yes but do you have the hidden $WINDOWS.~BT folder jared? true, it can't hurt. b, when you do decide to do the upgrade, make sure there is sited help available.
I just decided it wasn't for me, yet.
I suspect that is the case.
The click on reserve.
But even if it does download, it won't install.
The complaint in the article is the fact it does download.
All updates download, and you can install them manually, or not.
This has been Microsoft's policy for years.
To complain about it because it's Windows 10 is silly.
Microsoft doesn't know you've only got 32GB drives on your system, they just do as you ask in the settings.
My stance, is how is that wrong?
I have the habit John of looking at the updates.
Most times they are just numbers, but when it is something major, like this, it will be labeled.
that's just it. it downloads weather you reserve it or not. that folder I kept telling you about? it was created on July 10th on this box. and wayne, its considered an automatic important update. its gonna install weather you want it or not. Windows 10 should not be considered an important update. letting you know its free? yes. but downloading of 3 gigs of data should not be done without the user exclusively reserving the upgrade.
Windows 10 is in my system tray, I just discovered. So just because it's there, I don't think it's installed or is it? Nothing is different with my computer, it seems.
I have used, and talked to several people with out Windows 10, and it doesn't install automaticly.
John, you have to agree to terms and such before it will even install.
In the articles case, it might download, and I've not seen that, nor heard about it from the people I support, and that is a few.
But install, no.
Even some updates that are deemed important, won't install automaticly either, you must agree to terms before they start.
You installed Windows 10. Think about all you had to do to get it installing.
I tend to think the author of this article, like many will, are trying to give Microsoft a bad rep.
That isn't unusual.
How can you prove it isn't doing as the article says, unless you've got a really wide group of people to ask?
In my case, if 10 people tell me nope, I've not seen that, and I personally see 5 machines regularly that haven't had it happen, it can be said, maybe I did something to stop it. Smile.
But, okay, we'll agree to disagree on this one.
i had to uninstall apps that it didn't like and i had to agree to termbs before i installed it
Which is exactly what Wayne has been saying John. People have to agree to terms before Windows 10 is even installed.
My system tray has "Upgrade to Windows 10" in it, but I've not selected to install anything, and won't do so because I'm currently running JAWS 14.
I have my computer set to let me install Windows updates manually, and have not found that to be problematic at all.
I bet you manually installed KB3035583. furthermore, I bet you have that $WINDOWS.~BT folder and my guess is its around 3 gigs or so in size.
you have the windows 10 files installer downloaded even though you never asked for it. how is this right? somebody please explain this to me. what am I not getting? why should this installer be an automatic update?
I've tried.
It, is, an update.
It is free.
It doesn't install, but maybe in some cases downloads.
When you install it, it even acts like an update, it isn't like installing an OS, because it keeps all your settings and files.
Any update that you don't like, and that is any, can be removed.
It is how Microsoft has done it forever, so why should Windows 10 be different?
Explain that to me?
I probably do have that update installed John, but so what. I see no difference in the way my computer is operating, so it's nothing to gripe about.
As Wayne has tried to tell you, and I'll back him up, so what if that particular update downloads to your computer; if you don't register to get Windows 10, you shouldn't worry.
I think we all get that you don't think it should be classified as an update, and I say if you really take issue with it, complain to Microsoft. I'm sure it won't make a difference, but maybe you'll feel better afterwards.
The problem is, a whole new operating system isn't a normal download. Little stuff, I don't mind being just "So, I'm your computer, and I'm doing this." Not a whole new system! That is more than NUTS!
Take the IPhone for example. The 9.4 upgrade crashes the 5c. You think after Jane Doe says "This is what happened, and I had to get my phone replaced," that I'm going to click the "Download Now," button? Not on your life!
So what I think John is saying, is a whole new system doesn't need to be an autodownload. I'll take the time, and save my energy till I need to download it, and it's not going to play hockey, with my computer as the puck.
Make sense? Does to me. Can we all play nice with each other, and find the real problem, instead of saying how sick of complaints someone is?
And, if someone is sick of hearing complaints about windows ten, don't read the board. Not trying to tell someone what to do, but the solution is so simple.
Blessings,
Me
It is a whole new system, but again, you agree to this.
If you didn't, you'd carefully read each and not get it, because you'd be installing manually.
Microsoft doesn't give you an in between. You either have to let all downloads in, or none at all. That's the problem.
Blessings,
Me
Not true. You can select updates.
I would not advise it for people that are not tech savvy, but you can.
Now, with Windows 10, Microsoft is sort of pushing updates period. They say this is to keep all systems as updated as possible.
Again, when installing Windows 10, you agree to this? Smile.
Wayne is right. You can indeed select which updates to download or not. For example, the latest version of Skype is in my list of updates to download, but I have not and will not be selecting it. Therefore, it won't download/install to my machine. Make sense?
You can in fact choose let updates download for me but let me choose what/when to install them.
You can even keep them from downloading if you wish on 7 or 8.
What's wrong with the new Skype? It works beautifully?
I also have no problems with the new Skype hell mine's set to auto update.
Here's the issue. Most people will not set their computers to manually update. Among those who do, many will just update automatically anyway, unless they se something that makes sense to them. Now, if it said something like "Windows 10 Update", that would be understandable. But KB with a bunch of numbers after it means nothing to anyone, unless they specifically know its significance, and most people, even those who manugally update, don't research every single update that they see. Furthermore, as Auntie_Captain_Obvious has said, there is a big different between a minor update to your system and an entire system upgrade! Finally, while many of us (myself included) are on unlimited plans, that's not the case for everyone. I recently bought a TMobile hotspot to use as a backup outside, and for when I go on trips for over an hour, if I choose to take my laptop with me. I will either choose 1gb or 3gbs per month. Granted, they don't have overages, they just throttle speeds. But many companies do charge if you go over, which can add up to a lot of money. But even in my case, why should my speed drop because of a download that I didn't even realise was occurring? If I didn't know about it, I wouldn't even understand why my speed dropped after only a few hourse on Facebook! What if I was using someone else's hotspot and used up his/her data over this? I would get in trouble and not even know why? Do you see the problems now?
thanks eleni.
No.
You are also instructed to turn automatic updates off when you are on limited data.
Not only is this suggested by Microsoft, but your data provider.
When you use a hotspot, you normally disable updates, not only for Microsoft, but other programs as well.
Adobe, Skype, your printer software, and other programs you might have that update.
In short, Microsoft isn't the only company sending you automatic updates, if you've chosen them.
Next, soon as you close out your computer, that update stops
Last, what about all the other updates that have been installing? These use data too, but you aren't complaining.
At least, this one makes you install it, it doesn't change your computer automaticly.
Sorry folks. .
I read a form yesterday.
“Disadvantages to Windows 10.”
People were complaining that after they installed it, printers didn’t work.
Extra drives weren’t found.
Backups for different operating systems were no longer working.
Anti-virus programs weren’t working.
Here’s the thing.
People expect Microsoft to teach them technical computing, or protect them from other company’s technical glitches.
Example, the reason printers may not work, would be no updated drivers available, or if you have it set up on a network, the computer it feeds from.
That isn’t Microsoft’s fault, but they are getting slammed for any and all computer issues.
This article is one of them.
People have been getting updates downloaded, but all of a sudden it’s a problem.
That is provided this is actually happening automatically.
Apple and other company’s that attempt to move people out of the comfort zone face the same gripes.
Okay, just had to say that. Lol
At least they've not gotten slammed due to the price for this one.
when are we gonna have windows reginize we are on a hotspot connection and offer to disable updates while on that, but keep them on while on a WiFi connection? wayne, not everybody is computer savvy. if I had my parenst set to manual updates, they'd never ( and I mean ever) bother to install them. they'd never even think about it. no, a system trey icon wouldn't even be noticed by them. if I didn't install windows 10, they wouldn't ever bother. they want to turn there computers on and have it just work. period. They aren't ever thinking of updates unless it stairs them in the face and forces them to update whatever it is. I don't care weather its windows, malwarebytes, flash player or whatever. ,if its set to automatic, it'll just install. I want to use my computer, not babysit updating it . with the fast computer I have, I don't have to worry about turning off java updates or turning off this other update. I'm more tech savvy then some, and even I don't like to micromanage every single blasted thing my computer does. to me, if you are manually updating every program and have nothing set to update anything without you looking at it, you are micromanaging your computer. If you are doing that, then you are spending less time using it and more time configuring/updating it. I figure if an update doesn't play nice or work, then I'll figure out how to downgrade it. Usually things just work without problems. not everybody will know how or want to spend the time fixing stuff if it goes arie though. I know of more people than just my parents that could care less. they want somebody else to set it up and just have it work. If an update stairs them in the face (like a box comes up and says yo yo, there's an update here, would you like to install it, then sure they will do so. but if it doesn't actually prevent them with it, then no they won't think to manually check or even to look at the trey if its set to set to download and let me choose. Wayne, surely you know of people that upgrade and expect their computers to just work. i know of people that don't even know what a driver is, and frankly could care less.
Yes, I know people exactly like this.
That is why Wiindows 10 doesn't automaticly install.
Is it Microsoft's fault people don't know these things?
It is also why they've set up 24 7 help.
They can fix it remotely, or at the store for you, free of charge.
Anything it does, can be reversed.
These same people you talk about, won't be missing a few KB of hard drive space either.
GB wayne, not KB!
if you are on an HP stream 11 that has 32 GB of EMMC, 3 GB is a hell of a lot of space to miss.
yes you are correct that it doesn't auto install from what I've seen and I stand corrected, but nor should it just auto download 3 GB of data either. no. this is wrong!
Most computers these days have far far more than just 32 gb of data. Maybe it's wrong in your thoughts, but that's your thoughts. Weather the person chooses to install 10 now or wait a while, they'll still download that 3 gb of files, regardless. Limited connections or not, they'll still have to get the setup files.
yeah but why? I know what most computers have, but some do have these tablits and cheap laptops with very small storage spaces. some are on metered connections. why should MS be aloud to put this 3GB in a hidden folder like that? and come next year in July, will this folder be automaticly removed if the user never finds it/doesn't upgrade?
I stand corrected on the space, but 3GB isn't much even out of 32GB.
Again, the people that don't look won't miss it.
It they run in to needing 3GB they'll start dumping stuff.
If they've read the article and believe they might have the folder, and can not remove it, Microsoft will do so.
What else can they do but give people free support to compensate for their technical inability?
I've read for forms, and that was one complaint I never saw, only on this article and one other.
So, I'm not even sure it happens just by proxy.
I've not seen it personally, and I work on several machines, or know people with them that have no desire to upgrade.
ok, I see.
There's no proof that 3gb of data is being downloaded. We've heard from a couple people who may have clicked reserve and not realized it. Does anyone on this board have the hidden folder who did not click reserve? I checked both my computers and do not have the folder.
So my computer has windows 10 as an optional update. Curious. If I have driver issues because I have an acer computer, will the download stop or will jaws stop talking? I know nothing about drivers and can't tell if I need new ones to put windows 10 on the machine. I have jaws 16 and windows 7 now. I have the latest update for jaws, but somebody told me to wait for jaws 17 before I downloaded windows 10. Opinions?
Mostly Windows 10 will get all important drivers.
If you have things like printers, and accessories, you may need to go to the company website for that product to get them.
Any programs you have that Windows 10 won't run will be removed during the install.
In some cases Jaws stops talking after everything is installed, so you have to use narrator, didn't spell that correctly, to do the last couple things.
Jaws comes back after.
The last version of 16 in my opinion runs Windows 10 fine, but you may wish to wait until 17 is complete.
I always suggest when doing this sort of thing, you have sighted help on hand if you are not computer savvy.
In your case, simply take your machine to a Microsoft store. They will do it for you drivers and all.
So it sounded like it wanted to uninstall jaws and open book; I stopped the operation immediately. Will get the vendor who installed everything on my computer to get a look at this through team viewer. Question is, and I will ask before any install takes place, why would 10 want to uninstall programs before being put on the computer? I may be a senior citizen, but am glad I have the smarts to stop before I make a mess of my computer; trust me, learned the hard way about that.
You have to have a certain version of Jaws for 10 to work properly. as to Openbook, not sure if fs is going to make a version that supports 10 or not. It wouldn't do you any harm, just removes programs it knows aren't stable under 10, and the older versions of Jaws than 16 fit in that group.
Freedom Scientific offers a tool to prepare your computer for 10. I suggest you run it.
After you do, remember to recheck the box that starts Jaws automaticly before you restart.
For whatever reason, the tool unchecks that box.
If you forget, you'll need to type
jaws16
in the run box to start it.
Cool, John! Thanks.

I want to know why I should spend most of my day, micromanaging my computer. I don't know about you, Wayne, but I have other things to do. Like living? Not my whole life is on my computer, you know. But, I do need it.
And, as far as instruction on the computer, I'm sure techies will teach us, if we so choose. However, some of us, me and others, can't even aford to deal with regular things, like electricity, and internet. Who's going to offer free teaching? Sure, I can get IPhone training, at our WCB Convention. But, conventions cost money to go to. Thus, "Nothing is really free."
I'm with John. I don't understand half of this machine's workings. I don't have time to micromanage. Not when I needed a job, months ago.
And, it seems to me, they're getting more intense about pushing Windows10. If it wasn't the only system I know, and if what made me blind didn't also give me a learning disability, I could pick up on this really fast. But, even if I wished for things to change, I think learning a new system is not tops on my list. Like I said, I got other things, that I have to worry about.
Blessings,
Sarah
Windows 10 isn't horrible. I just don't prefer it.
there's stuff that is coming that will make it seem more appealing so i'll try the upgrade again at some point.
Sarah, it is my business to know.
But, I don't spend all day on my computer either. I have a life too.
Smile.
